Photo Essay: Kwale Medical Camp

During August 2024, our Pioneers East Africa staff team led a group of doctors and medical students to Kwale, Kenya to support the work of our emerging Pioneers team in Kwale. Over the course of ten days we conducted a medical camp while also checking in with the Kwale Team’s development of Bible literacy courses and other evangelism and discipleship tools.

The local villagers began to arrive at Magombani Primary school the night before the medical camp started. Over the course of the week, we treated almost 400 people, many of whom were suffering from blood deficiency issues due to poor nutrition.

Though many of them had to wait a long time to be seen, the villagers said our triage was comprehensive and hospitable. No-one left without treatment. We thank God that we had enough medicine and doctors.

Our local mode of transport, the boda boda, was handy but pretty tiring after 10 days of daily trips – especially when it rained! We really need to raise money for a ministry van!!

Some of us decided to go pray for a member of a local church who has been sick with anaemia for some time. It turned out to be quite a walk through the hills, but it gave us a chance to talk about all that God is doing in Kwale.

Our emerging Pioneers team at Kwale is learning to use Bible Literacy and Discovery Bible Studies to reach the people around them. The trip to Kwale gave us an opportunity to review the work so far and make plans for the future.

Kwale Team member Janet is teaching women in the village to read. Some can now read portions of their Bibles.

Team member Christine will begin leading the Bible Literacy class at the church once a week.

Four women came to faith in Jesus during our time in Kwale. Team member Faustina will disciple and mentor them so that they can begin learning the tenets of their new faith.

We are so grateful to the Lord for his provision for us and for the people of Kwale. We are also grateful for the medics who joined us. They loved the hospitality they received and want to go back next year! We pray that this is the beginning of a strong partnership and that some of them will sense God calling them to the nations.
